BCE (BCE:TSX) chart analysis

Always trade in the direction of the major trend
BCE chart analysis. Always trade in the direction of the major trend.

BCE 4 Year Candlestick Chart

This is not the first time I have posted a chart for BCE where I emphasized the most important principle of technical analysis: Always trade in the direction of the major trend. Is there any doubt about the major trend for BCE? The 200 Day SMA is a good approximation of the trendline.

The current resistance level is $43.00 and there is a good chance that BCE will break above this resistance level when it reports before the bell on Wednesday.

Compare the above chart for BCE to the chart for the TSX Index.

Canadian Natural (CNQ:TSX) candlestick chart

Intermediate trend is down for Canadian Natural Resources
There was a bullish candlestick on July 17 but the intermediate trend is still down. CNQ will meet resistance at $28.00

CNQ 6 Month Daily Chart

There was a bullish candlestick on July 17 but the intermediate trend is still down. There must be a confirmed breakout above the downward sloping trendline for the near-term uptrend to continue. CNQ will first meet resistance in the $28.00 to $28.50 price zone. A breakout above the trendline will see CNQ meet resistance at the June high of $29.00 and major resistance on the weekly chart in the $30.00 price zone.

Thomson Reuters (TRI:TSX) candlestick chart analysis

Shooting star candlestick at resistance of $30.00
Thomson Reuters six month daily candlestick chart showing a shooting star candlestick as a reaction to the earnings release.

Thomson Reuters (TRI:TSX) Daily Chart

There was a positive reaction to the earnings release for Thomson Reuters as indicated by the gap and the close of $29.78. But the shooting star candlestick is a graphical representation of the selling pressure at the $30.00 resistance level. The stock opened at $29.75, rallied to $30.21 but closed at $29.78: practically unchanged from the open.

The trend is everything in technical analysis. The major trend is down for Thomson Reuters, the intermediate trend is sideways and the near-term trend is up.

A confirmed break (use the percentage and time filter) above resistance of $30.00 would indicate an intermediate target price of $33.00. If the stock cannot break resistance, it will continue to trade in the congestion zone with support around the $28.00 level.
